The Catwalk is back!

Years ago, a different kind of dolling forum opened. Where most forums focused on fantasy or dystopian worlds, The Catwalk was based on the fashion industry: each member made up their own designer and models and could present their fashion lines for everyone to marvel at. I was too insecure back then to join it, but kept an eye on it and most fashion threads. I could see great displays of originality, creativity and personality behind each member and it was one of the most inspiring dolling sites I can remember. For those of you who missed it, go join!

GLAM'S Falling Spectacular Events are still going on!

The Picksels challenge has just now entered its second round: this week you need to draw something involving cranberries. And the other events are still open, so get working on those entries! For more information, click the link or read my previous journal. No, but go check the forum, it's much more fun.

GLAM!'s Homecoming Dance Event
My examples for the Homecoming Dance challenge going on at GLAM!. We have a series of events going on right now, called Fall Spectacular 2014. Right now, only these three ladies are attending the dance, so go design your entry to keep them company.

I have more sketches that will eventually make it into dolling form. But I'm hoarding them till they get done. Not really. These three are dresses 5, 7 and 8.

Fall has come and GLAM!'s celebrating it with a new series of events: The Falling Spectacular 2014. There's a challenge for everyone: dollers, pixel artists and basemakers.

THE CHALLENGES

Interested in pixel art? Go join the Picksels Challenges. A series of challenges where you'll be requested to draw and colour a themed prop. Each challenge will last for a week, and accept both pixeled and tooled entries.

If you prefer to make bases, you can always drop by the Bobbing for Bases topic. Here all you have to do is make your own base, be it a new one or a remake. All kinds of bases -- full body or portraits -- are allowed as long as they're 100% original -- i.e. no tracing involved. The best bases will be featured in GLAM's future base races.

What about a dance? Get your dancing partner and drag them to GLAM's Homecoming Dance Contest. You can enter a single dancer -- male or female -- or a couple. Just make sure they couple's interacting in any way. Different categories will be created depending on the number of entries, so do not hesitate to join in the fun.

All these challenges are fun and all, but we all know the great thing about dolling is collaborating. Guess what? We too have a collab going on: The Falling Together Now collab. The only thing you have to do to participate is to make a doll of yourself -- or your characters -- on the Duckie's Director base. You can wear anything that says "Fall" for you. Go join!

Say you like the event, but don't feel like dolling. Well, you too have an event for you: The Scavenger Hunt Challenge. Every day, a set of five pixelated leaves will be hidden in a series of posts. You need to find them all. However, there's a catch: you will only be credited for your findings if you comment on the post. The kind of comment is up to you, but we all love meaningful comments. Now is the time to socialise a bit more.

THE PRIZES

This is all great, but what can you get out of participating? We can't afford sending you on a cruise to the Greek Islands, but we do have something much better. The prizes for the challenges range from graphics, to custom dolls -- think of a free request by one of our editors --, or a collab by all members of the staff to showcase in your signature. You can also get forum currency to spend in the forum's shops or to hoard for all eternity.

So, go join! WE'RE WAITING FOR YOU!

Check out the original doll by talsbee

I tried to keep the sky theme, while still making it different from the other sky doll, and changed the colours from night to dusk. I kept the features of the doll (dark skin and hair), but changed the dress colour so she looks as part of the sky (she could still be the moon or part of the clouds). Baseless.

I wanted to congratulate you on winning MDE!! Your dolls are absolutely gorgeous and I loved how ferociously pink your final entry was. I think your entries have been the most unique to date and it's wonderful.

Also you put up one serious fight for MDI. I totally thought you were going to win right up to the very end. I guess I couldn't let you win both MDE aaaand MDI XD

Thank you! :D I knew I wanted to make her different from all my previous dolls, which meant adding more bright colours, but I was surprised by how colourful she turned out. I settled for bright colours as part of her style and kept looking for excuses to add more. I was a bit afraid when turning in my round 3 entry because I messed up with the levels in Photoshop and it was all too bright. I kept thinking of excuses for it to be that way (she's on stage, there's a lot of light up there), but I did worry that I was going to get kicked out.

Congratulations on kicking my ass, though. You had three gorgeous entries and created on of the most elegant pageant winners I've seen. Your gown for the final round was beautiful. I still hate you for it though :P

I have wanted to get back into this so much but couldnt find anything current until now
Prepare to be stalked as you are the only string to to connect me with the comunity I have found thus far.
Take pity on me please and share any comunitys/groups of dollers and then If you feel so inclined I have older works of dolling in the recesses of my gallerie that you may enjoy :)

Such a geat responsibility :P Let's see. There are some DA groups dedicated to dolling, although the big anime base invasion makes it harder to find communities of old school dollers. You could start by checking Growing-Dollers to find more dollers and interesting ideas. Minishizzle used to be a group devoted to one-round contests and fun events. It seems to be dead now, but you can find lots of dollers among its members and some fun ideas and challenges. There are three groups founded by the same person that may make it easier to find resources: Never Stop Dolling, a dolling group; Dolling Base Catalog which collects original bases to make base hunting easier (both have zero tolerance for traced bases); and Dolling Tutorials, which collects tutorials that may be useful for dollers. It features dolling tutorials, but also digital painting, drawing and pixel art. All these groups have at least one affiliate, so checking those may be a good idea as well.

Outside of DA, I think the biggest community as of now is GLAM!, which is currently hosting a redoll event. Sign ups end today, so if you're interested, please check it out. All you have to do is get an account (free) and post some select dolls of yours here. Once sign ups are closed, participants will be arranged in pairs so you'll be redolling someone elses work. You will be sent all their submitted dolls and you'll pick the one you like the most. There's a catch, though. You have to add some changes to it so it isn't an exact replica. I like to think of it as reinterpreting a theme and adding your own touch to it. This was my redoll for last year.

Aside from Glam, there are other communities like Dollstalgia, a small community of nostalgic dollers with a fantasy theme. It may or may not be your style, but it also has some interesting events. Black Sheep Asylum is a more neutral forum, with no set theme. It does have a pretty laid back attitude which makes it a nice place to visit from time to time. I'm keeping the bestest of all for last, though: The Limelight Cafe. I admit that I'm not as active as I should, but it's the most interesting forum I've been to since I took up dolling. It has challenges similar to base races, but they apply it to everything: bases, themes, fantasy or history, just to name a few. There's always something going on and it does have a very welcoming and supporting community. It also has a DA group: The Limelight Cafe. These forums are on the small side, so they tend to get pretty inactive from time to time. I know for sure that there are other communities, but I'm not a member of them, so I can't tell how active they are. Pixel Princess has a pretty cutesy look (and you need to register to see the forum) but it has some interesting activities like base races. They also seem to have monthly activities. I used to be a member a while back, and I liked it in there. But I'm pretty much a lurker, so I always miss on the important stuff, like logging in your account before it gets deleted. Mouldycat has a contest forum with some interesting events going on here. That's all I can think of right now. I'll think of more and let you know if I find them.
